Cosplay, the captivating art of dressing up as fictional characters from the realms of anime, comics, video games and beyond, is a creative and transformative process that relies heavily on the power of imagery. Cosplay, to me, is more than just wearing a costume; it involves character embodiment and serves as a form of communication, sending a powerful message to viewers, connecting with communities, and even challenging societal norms. When mixed with the season of the witch (Halloween), the effect becomes that much greater as cosplayers also add an enchanting and eerie layer to the process. And just as cosplayers convey messages through their wardrobe, DJs can also employ their music to convey messages and ignite social awareness, and when it comes to this form of messaging, no one does it better than SailorBoomParty.
On Friday, October 27, 2023, Halloweekend kicked off, and one of my stops led me to The Deep End in Queens, where I had the chance to visit the DJs hidden in the musical mist, DJ Dimple and DJ Highgnx, alongside the haunting vibes of IDKGravity (XERO Gravity). Two years ago, they completely owned this venue with their incredible musical prowess, and now, they've made a triumphant return, once again wowing their fans with their musical jutsu.
Being there to witness this experience was truly something you had to be a part of.
Sidenote: They also raised funds for the Audre Lorde Project, which is a Bklyn, NY based organization focusing on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-Spirit, Trans and Gender Non Conforming (LGBTSTGNC) People of Color.
Sailor Boom is notorious for applying pressure to their fans as they manipulate tracks, integrate chords, and create new sounds. As I stood there listening to their musical lineup, I, too, got into the groove. I was mesmerized, forgetting my role as a reporter, and was caught up in their magic. Yes, Sailor Boom killed it, as they always do, but I also felt nostalgic as I missed the unique magic they bring – that synergy between cosplay, self-expression, activism and twerking.
Their ability to arouse a sense of self-expression through their music and visuals is a testament to their artistry and the connection they establish with their audience. It's not just a performance; it's a captivating experience where music, cosplay, and self-expression musically intertwine, leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to witness the experience. But this cohesiveness wouldn’t have been possible without some help of horror’s family friend, XERO Gravity.
XERO’s momentum and captivating presence shined when she took hold of the microphone, transforming her energy into an infectious force that resonated with the crowd as she delivered a lively entertainment experience.
While an emcee's duty is to establish a connection with the audience, fostering an inviting and all-encompassing atmosphere through their charm, wit, and relatable demeanor, she took it one step higher and “matrixed” it. She carefully read the audience and adjusted their tone and approach, accordingly, ensuring that the event's atmosphere matched the audience's mood and expectations. From the beginning to the end, she provided an experience that was safe, inviting, enjoying and memorable.

Every time I make it to their events, I have to look beyond the beats and rhythms and focus on the mesmerizing energy they bring to the stage. Sailor Boom has this supernatural ability to transform any venue into a realm of euphoria and excitement. It's not just about the music; it's about the way they connect with the crowd. As you stand there in the midst of this experience, you can’t help but feel a sense of unity and inclusivity. Sailor Boom's performances transcend boundaries, welcoming people from all backgrounds, ages, and walks of life with love and respect. The love energy they convey through their music resonates deeply, reminding us how the power of music can bring people together in celebration of life and joy.
