Washington, DC’s premiere con is immense as participants from all over the Northern and Southern States gather to attend the pop culture event of the Spring. A 3.5-hour drive through the sporadic rainstorms in the states of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Washington District of Columbia brought Region 99 to the doorways of Awesome Con D.C. and it did not disappoint….
Sorry for the delay!!! Emerald City Comic Con was such a wonderful experience, I needed to make sure that I noted everything in my experience. I’m happy to say that I’ve been to a Comic Con on the opposite side of the US and this experience has now made me want to go to Comic Cons all over the world. For anyone who hasn’t attended ECCC , I would highly recommend it. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, Washington was such a breath of fresh air away from the east coast cons. This con, unlike many others was very accepting as an amalgamation of different genders, sexualities, races, and open expression was able to reveal themselves in cosplay, art and panel discussions....
As you may know by now, I’ve been to many conventions across the east coast, occasionally traveling a few cities away or even one state over to attend them. Yet, this past weekend, I was given the opportunity to report on a convention on the opposite side of the country: Emerald City Comic Con, out in the tech capital of the country: Seattle, Washington. The weekend was absolutely packed with wall to wall excitement and surprises, and I’m here to give you the scoop on each and every one of them here; From an animator’s perspective!!!
Friday’s excursion into the Green City of Pop Culture led to some major Funko shopping, Cosplay picture snapping and a great panel discussion. This time, more familiar to the locale of the con and armed with my Resident Evil map, I had a few goals in mind as to how I was going to spend my day.
Thursday’s adventure was a great introduction to the ECCC. With today marking the initial day of Region 99s venture to the west coast, the local artwork, indie and professional cosplay here certainly kicked butt with ReedPop once again setting up a fantastic con.
Pop culture is now the driving force behind innovation reaching unimaginable heights in today’s toy society. From Funko to Arcade games, Pop culture has revolutionized the term ‘collectible’ and is now the driving force in the ever-growing toy industry. Funko said something that is now the current gospel of the toy industry and quite summarizes the ever-growing collectible toy market: “Everyone is a fan of something”. Those words, my dear readers, is the mantra that Toy Fair 2019 provided this year…..
Armed with a curious mind and a limited amount of time, I set out to see the Schomburg Center with an excitement of looking at Black comics followed by hopefully glimpsing the past of my African-American roots…

One of the new formats I'm going to introduce to Region 99 will be my “One Question…” series. Here, I go to a particular convention with one question and don't leave until I have it answered. This month, I attended PAX unplugged, which focused on table top gaming and my “One Question” was this: How, in 2018, are tabletop games not only as popular as ever, but seemingly the most popular they have ever been?
